UX design as a principle

  • Category: Financial Services Modern Software Engineering

We work with companies that struggle to start digital transformation initiatives, status quo holding tight to legacy systems. On the other side of the coin, we see companies who can’t move fast enough and need our support accelerating development. Either way, culture plays a huge role in the success of digital transformation. Berkshire Hathaway was founded in 1839 and wrought with legacy systems. The company was ripe for digital transformation.

Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies (BHHC) came to Kin + Carta to discuss reimagining the BQuick auto rater platform. In the case of this long standing company, UX as a principle was, indeed, a cultural breakthrough that would support lead generation and revenue.

Modernizing a legacy system

The existing platform, repurposed from a wholesale agent platform some eight years earlier, felt dated and cumbersome. BHHC needed a custom platform that made getting an auto quote seamless and painless to compete with other insurance giants including Progressive and Geico.

After an intensive user research phase, the Kin + Carta team got to work to create an intuitive auto rater builder that would revolutionize BHHC’s quoting processes. Not only would this create major efficiencies for BHHC, but it would create more revenue opportunities as thousands of insurance agents in the BHHC network could use the tool to get a quick auto quote in minutes, instead of having to call a BHHC team member and getting a quote over 24-hours later.

Ongoing iteration and digital marketing services

The new BQuick platform was recently released into 5 test markets in the United States, and we’ve been working with BHHC on future iterations of the platform for the main organization, as well as rebranding the platform and spinning it off to work for other key insurance branches in the BHHC network.

Based on the success of this work, Berkshire Hathaway has contracted Kin + Carta to support digital marketing, CMS, and digital product initiatives. We’re proud to help a company with such historical success find their digital transformation foothold.

Kin + Carta helped us take a step in the right direction—toward innovation—and I’m very excited to see the product in action. Kin + Carta has done a fantastic job.
