The Head of Engineering Management role in a nutshell:

As our Head of Engineering Management, you will lead the engineering management practice across Europe. You will be responsible for the growth, community health, strategic evolution, and operational elements of the practice. You will report to the CTO of Cloud & Platform and work closely with the global CTO, Directors of Engineering Operations and Consultancy, and the European Engineering Leadership team. You will manage Craft Leads, where appropriate, and Managers of Managers to ensure we grow their leadership skills and careers as well as developing their respective engineering communities.

The Team

You will join the European Engineering Leadership team, which consists of the heads of engineering practices and the Directors of Operations and Consultancy to evolve an effective European Engineering practice. You will build a world class team and the future leaders of the Engineering practice.

Job Description

You are an experienced and effective engineering leader. You set the strategic direction and standards of excellence while leading and growing the Engineering community. You have a proven track record of developing talent at all seniority levels. You have strong experience driving growth of the team through hiring and retaining talent. You build psychologically safe teams and are passionate about helping us reach our IDEA goals.

Leadership + Management

You are accountable for the growth, effectiveness, happiness, and other areas of the Engineering practice. You are responsible for building and evolving the engineering management team that sits alongside our current distributed management model for engineering practices. Other responsibilities include:

  • Evolving the engineering management practice strategy to cover new areas of growth in engineering, how you will grow the skills and capabilities of our engineers, and how we can effectively scale and build our team to meet client demand.
  • Executing the strategy through a mix of personal contributions, delegation, and leading others in your practice. You will measure the effectiveness of your initiatives and hold individuals accountable for their areas of responsibility. 
  • Managing craft leads to help them develop their respective communities and identifying skills gaps and training opportunities to fill them.
  • Meeting weekly with your direct reports and quarterly with your skip levels to ensure the health and growth of your community.  
  • Driving engineering initiatives and using them as growth and career opportunities for the community.

Culture + People Experience

You are responsible for building an innovation focussed engineering culture that promotes people growth and enables engineers to grow their careers faster than they ever thought possible. Other responsibilities include:

  • Setting the example for technical leadership and helping emerging leaders develop skills to build their careers and our capabilities.
  • Coaching managers of managers and line managers on holistic people experience.
  • Defining metrics of management effectiveness (e.g. increasing eNPS) with the European Engineering Leadership team and measuring team effectiveness with them.
  • Refining and evolving the standards expected for each level of management.
  • Ensuring all engineers have a clearly defined career path with regularly reviewed objectives.
  • Regularly recognising contributions so engineers feel valued for their contributions.
  • Analysing team performance and remediating problem areas as they arise.
  • Working closely with the Director of Engineering Consulting to ensure we deliver projects at the highest quality, mitigate issues as they arise, facilitate conflict management, and coach others on resolving delivery issues.
  • Working with the Director of Engineering Operations to ensure effective, fair, and equitable casting to projects. You will measure casting effectiveness over time to ensure that we are giving opportunities and stretch assignments to build the skills of the engineering team in a fair and equitable way.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness (IDEA)

  • While IDEA underpins all that we do, there are some specific areas that require auditing for effectiveness, such as de-biasing of all processes, including hiring, progression, discovery of internal opportunities, etc. Other responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring that the leaders of the engineering practice are emulating the right behaviours to build a safe environment that encourages growth and collaboration.
  • Ensuring that we build a psychologically safe environment that encourages everyone to contribute their ideas and is able to give regular feedback to each other.
  • Working with the Talent team to source a wide range of candidates through a combination of community outreach, network deep dives, and tapping up your own network.


  • You are responsible for attracting and retaining the best talent as we scale our engineering team in close collaboration with the European Talent team. Other responsibilities include:
  • Setting target competencies and hiring standards for new and existing roles.
  • Refining and evolving hiring and interview practices to ensure they are de-biased, fair, equitable, and produce high quality hires.
  • Modeling team growth that considers multiple variables including demand projections, needs of the practice, team shape, and engineering strategy.
  • Interviewing of candidates and facilitating scheduling with other team members to interview and hire top quality candidates.
  • Developing onboarding processes and programs that ensure new hires hit the ground running and feel welcomed well before they start.
  • Building onboarding and up-skilling programs for grads and career switchers.
  • Working with the Marketing and Talent teams to build a world class employer brand that attracts engineers who want to work at the scale and quality that we champion. You will achieve this through coordinated marketing campaigns, building the presence of the engineering team in the wider engineering community, and building your own brand.

Learning + Development

  • You are responsible for evolving and growing the skills of our engineering practice. Other responsibilities include:
  • Developing a framework for onboarding and up-skilling as we expand through partnerships, acquisitions, and organic growth in new geographies.
  • Developing bootcamps or similar programs for skill building and bringing in non traditional talent (e.g. returning mums and career switchers).
  • Identifying areas of improvement and skill gaps in the engineering practice and building appropriate training materials to close these gaps.
  • Developing and delivering training and coaching materials for engineering management and other leadership skills to grow leaders and their teams.
  • Facilitating a mentoring scheme with the practice leads to aid craft skill progression.

Essential Requirements + Behaviours

  • At least 10 years experience of delivering software and leading engineering teams in hands-on leadership roles. Consulting experience is a plus.
  • At least 5 years of engineering management experience including 2 years of managing managers.
  • Experienced at growing the skills and leadership capacity of engineering teams.
  • Experienced at coaching and/or building and facilitating workshops to drive learning outcomes.
  • Experience at building psychologically safe environments that encourages everyone to contribute their ideas and feedback to the conversation.
  • Experience of hiring at pace to support a fast growing business.
  • Experienced in strategic engineering leadership. Able to devise and execute strategic initiatives to improve the community and the business.
  • Cross functional collaboration across all areas of the business to drive initiatives forward.
  • Highly collaborative ways of working and proactively seeking feedback on work produced.
