The Senior Web Engineer role in a nutshell

As a Senior Engineer, you'll be at the heart of any project you work on. You’ll have a specialism in Web technologies but use much broader technical experience to help steer your project team. You may bring a unique depth of knowledge in a specific topic, or you may have a breadth of expertise across many aspects of software development.

You will help define how some of the world’s biggest organisations use technology to drive their businesses, such as Tesco, Unilever, Toyota and The Economist. You’ll share your passion and experience with those around you, allowing and encouraging your less experienced teammates to step up.

In this Senior level role, your remit reaches beyond your project. Teammates in our Web Practice will naturally look to you for on-the-job coaching and broader career advice. Your success will be largely based on the success of those you influence.

At Kin + Carta you will become a great leader in your field. You’ll be encouraged to work with others to shape our product proposition for new clients and grow our in-house team of engineering experts.

What you can expect:

  • You’ll join our growing team of 30 Web Engineers within the wider Engineering Practice which comprises over 140 Engineers, all of whom all share a passion for building great products.
  • Even while working on client projects, you’ll benefit from knowledge sharing sessions across the business, such as the Web Practice’s weekly meeting, where we look at the latest innovations and technologies available to build experiences for the Web.
  • You’ll build market-leading products, typically within a team of 3-5 other engineers alongside a wider cross-functional agile team sourced from a mix of both Kin + Carta and the client’s own personnel.
  • You’ll help shape your product’s roadmap by taking part in all aspects of project planning and delivery.
  • In addition to your day-to-day client project work you’ll be working as part of a much larger cross-functional engineering team to drive forward initiatives which will help to grow and shape the operations of Kin + Carta as a business.
  • You’ll contribute to our continued growth by helping identify and interview potential great new teammates.

The type of person we would love to meet:

  • You’ll have commercial experience working within modern web application frameworks & libraries such as React, Vue or Angular.
  • Your default way of writing code is to use common best-practice programming patterns, while understanding why such approaches are important and you are able to communicate that knowledge to less-experienced teammates around you.
  • You’re experienced working with product owners to flesh out the details of a product’s features while raising and answering questions around non-functional requirements in areas such as security, performance optimisation and accessibility.
  • You’re comfortable with writing code in a way that is easily tested and you can write those tests using tools such as Jest, AVA or Mocha. You’re an advocate for ensuring the right processes, tools and checks are implemented in appropriate places in order to provide every possible assurance that the code being produced is of a high quality.
  • You have a great understanding of managing application state, side-effects and network communication methods using tools such as Redux, Vuex or Apollo.
  • You’re confident utilising different strategies for source control systems and releases, as well as setting up and advanced configuration of modern code production tooling & pipelines, such as the likes of Webpack or Rollup. You’re able to identify and configure appropriate tooling in this area when setting up a project from scratch.
  • You’re comfortable configuring development tools to assist with code quality and optimisation which are configured to run consistently and performantly both locally and within a cloud CI/CD environment. You’re able to analyse and optimise these processes for improved speed and reliability.
  • You’re comfortable reviewing other people’s work and suggesting improvements and are able to take on constructive critical feedback of your own code to drive your professional development.
  • You’re excited about the opportunity to work on a variety of projects presenting a wide range of different challenges, using a diverse range of technologies across a multitude of different public and private sector industries.
  • You enjoy problem solving and building robust solutions within complex technological situations, but are not afraid to ask questions to ensure that the right decisions are made.
  • You’re self-motivated, eager to identify avenues for improvement and always want to learn new things, while also seeking opportunities to share your own knowledge and experience with others.
